Performance mode
In performance mode, the first part of the arranger becomes a grid of clips you launch live while the song plays. Everything before the Start marker is the zone. The song skips over it, and those clips make a sound only when you launch them.
Set it up
Section titled “Set it up”- Choose TOOLS ▸ Set up for live performance. It’s also in the arranger’s menu, the arrow at the far left of its title bar.
- Answer the question, then pick a Marker count and Spacing under Marker settings. 16 markers, 4 bars apart, is where it starts. Accept adds them and a Start marker, switches to SONG and turns the mode on.
- Place clips in the zone. Each marker starts a column, and a track’s part of a column is a slot.
- Press Space, and launch.
With the arranger in front, Ctrl+P switches the mode on or off. It’s Performance mode in the arranger’s menu too, and it’s saved with the project. Without a Start marker there’s no zone, so nothing can be launched.
Launch clips
Section titled “Launch clips”With the mouse:
| Do this | To |
|---|---|
| Click a clip in the zone | Launch it. It loops until you stop or replace it |
| Right-click a clip | Stop its track |
| Click a track’s header | Stop the track at the next sync point. Alt stops it at once |
| Shift+click | Queue the clip |
| Alt+click | Launch at once, ignoring sync |
| Ctrl+click | Launch a scene (below) |
A track plays one zone clip at a time, and its clips after the Start marker stay silent while it does. If you launch a clip while stopped, it starts with playback.
With the computer keyboard: when it’s on, 40 keys launch the first five columns of tracks 1 to 8, and the other note keys do nothing.
| Keys | Tracks |
|---|---|
| 1 to 5, Q to T, A to G, Z to B | 1 to 4, top row first |
| 6 to 0, Y to P, H to ;, N to / | 5 to 8, top row first |
With a MIDI controller: set Performance mode MIDI channel in MIDI settings (F10). Notes 0 to 119 on that channel launch the first 10 tracks and 12 columns, and the arranger outlines the part they cover. Notes 120 to 124 scroll the grid, 125 and 126 trigger scenes while held, and 127 syncs to the toolbar’s snap while held.
Scenes and several clips in a slot
Section titled “Scenes and several clips in a slot”A Ctrl+click launches a scene: the clip’s clip group if it’s in one, else its column on its track group, else its whole column. Tracks with nothing in the scene stop, and a check in the arranger’s menu makes them keep playing instead.
Put more than one clip in a slot and each launch plays the next. A MIDI note’s velocity picks one instead, while Velocity picks sub-clips is ticked in the same menu.
Per-track settings
Section titled “Per-track settings”Right-click a track’s header and open Performance settings:
- Press decides what a click does: restart the clip, play only while held, or latch on and off.
- Motion decides what plays after a pass: the same clip, nothing, the next slot along or a random one.
- Trigger sync decides when a launch takes effect, from at once up to the next 4 beats, or Auto by the clip’s length. Queue waits for the playing clip to finish its pass. Tolerant lets a launch made just after a sync point start straight away.
- Position sync decides where in the clip it starts. Off starts from its beginning, and the others jump to where the song’s position would put it.
Record a performance
Section titled “Record a performance”Arm Record before you start the song. When you stop, what each launched track played is written after the Start marker as ordinary clips on that track. On those tracks, clips already in that stretch are replaced. It’s one undo step, and TOOLS ▸ Cancel recording stops without writing anything.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- The clock counts from the Start marker, so its bars are negative in the zone.
- A playing clip is outlined and fills up as it plays, while Performance clip progress is ticked in the arranger’s menu. Performance track progress adds a bar along the track’s header.
