Lemon Delay

Lemon Delay repeats a sound after a set time. It can be a quick slap, a rhythmic echo that follows the project tempo, or a ping-pong that bounces between the speakers. The repeats can be filtered, smeared, crushed or distorted as they feed back.

It’s built into Lemon Studio, and also comes as a VST3 and CLAP plugin for other DAWs.

The Lemon Delay window: cards for input, delay time, delay model, feedback, modulation, diffusion, feedback distortion and output

  1. Put Lemon Delay in an effect slot on a mixer track.
  2. In the DELAY MODEL card, choose PING PONG.
  3. In DELAY TIME, switch TEMPO SYNC on, then turn TIME to pick a note length.
  4. In FEEDBACK, raise LEVEL until you hear a few repeats.
  5. Use the WET and DRY knobs in the OUTPUT column to balance the echo against the original.
Card What’s in it
INPUT One fader, captioned WET, for the level that goes into the delay
DELAY TIME TIME, TEMPO SYNC, KEEP PITCH (stops the pitch sliding when you change the time) and SMOOTHING. The OFFSET knob shifts the right side against the left, and in ping-pong it becomes PAN
DELAY MODEL MONO, STEREO, PING PONG or OFF, and STEREO, which sets how wide the two sides are
FEEDBACK LEVEL (how many repeats), a filter (LP, HP, BP or OFF) with CUTOFF and RES, and SMP RATE and BITS, which make the repeats grittier
MODULATION A RATE that moves the delay TIME and the filter CUTOFF, each by its own amount. A knob that is being moved gets a box around its name
DIFFUSION LEVEL and SPREAD, which smear the repeats
FEEDBACK DISTORTION LIMIT or SAT (saturation), with LEVEL, and KNEE and SYMMETRY for saturation. A small graph shows the curve
OUTPUT WET, TONE and DRY

Knobs that don’t apply in the current setup are greyed out. For example, the filter knobs are grey when the filter is OFF.

  • Use LP in the feedback filter so each repeat sounds darker than the last.
  • Add a little MODULATION to TIME for a chorus-like wobble. Turn KEEP PITCH off if you want the pitch to slide with it.
  • Turn BITS down for a lo-fi echo.
