Lemon Drum Sampler

Lemon Drum Sampler is a drum kit in one instrument. Its 32 pads are split into two banks of 16. Every pad has its own key, and plays one sample or a few layered by velocity. It’s built into Lemon Studio and also comes as a VST3 and CLAP plugin for other DAWs.

The Lemon Drum Sampler window: a four by four grid of pads, with the settings of the chosen pad beside it

  1. Add Lemon Drum Sampler from the ADD menu and click its name in the instrument rack.
  2. Click a pad to choose it. The pad plays when you click it, and the height of your click sets the velocity: near the top is soft, near the bottom is hard.
  3. Click LOAD and choose a sample, or drag a sample from the browser onto the pad.
  4. Do the same on other pads to fill the kit. Each pad shows its key, so you can play the kit from the piano roll or a MIDI controller.

BANK A and BANK B each show a grid of four by four pads. Choose a pad and the settings beside the grid show that pad:

  • KEY is the key that plays the pad. Click it and type a note name such as C5 or F#3.
  • VOLUME, PAN and TUNE set the level, the stereo position and the pitch of the whole pad.
  • Right-click a pad and choose Clear pad to empty it.

A pad can hold more than one layer, and each layer has its own sample. Use the arrows beside the layer settings to step through a pad’s layers. VEL LOW and VEL HIGH set the range of velocities that layer answers to, and its own VOLUME, PAN and TUNE balance it against the others. A softly played note can then play a quiet sample and a hard one a different, louder one.

Loading a sample onto a pad puts it in the first layer, playing at every velocity, and removes the pad’s other layers. Adding further layers in the window isn’t possible yet. Kits that already have layers keep and play them.

Two boxes make pads cut each other off, which is how a closed hi-hat stops an open one:

  • CHOKE puts the pad in a choke group, a number.
  • CHOKED BY names the group that stops this pad.

Give the open hi-hat a CHOKED BY of the closed hi-hat’s group, and playing the closed one silences the open one. Pads otherwise play their sample to the end.
