Exporting audio

Exporting turns your project into audio files. Choose FILE ▸ Export audio… (Ctrl+R) or the toolbar’s export button. FILE ▸ Export MP3… (Shift+Ctrl+R) opens the same form.

  1. Type a name and choose a folder.
  2. Under Play, choose Song for the arranger, or Pattern for one pass of the current pattern.
  3. Under Range, choose Whole, or Selection if you’ve made a time selection.
  4. Click the formats you want. You can tick several, and you’ll get one file for each.
  5. Click Export. The form tells you how long the result will be and about how big.

Your choices are remembered for next time.

Format Choices
WAV 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float
FLAC 16-bit or 24-bit, compression levels 0 to 8
MP3 64 to 320 kbps
OGG 64 to 320 kbps

The rest of the form applies to every format:

  • Sample rate: your device’s rate, or 44100 to 192000 Hz.
  • Channels: Stereo, Mono (merged), Mono (left) or Mono (right).
  • Resampling: from 2-point linear to 512-point sinc. Wider is cleaner and slower.
  • Dither adds dither to 16 and 24-bit files.
  • HQ for plugins asks hosted plugins for their high quality mode.

The metronome is never in an export. If the song has a Start marker the export begins there, and it follows skips: see Markers.

Tail decides what happens to the sound after the end, such as a reverb’s last moments.

  • Cut stops at the end.
  • Ring out keeps going until the sound dies away.
  • Wrap folds it back onto the start, which makes a loop with no gap.

Tick Split mixer tracks to also write every mixer track on its own, into a stems folder. This works for WAV and FLAC. Include the master adds the master’s own file. Two more checks let you leave out the effects on your tracks or on the master.

Other ways to get separate files:

  • Right-click a mixer track and choose File ▸ Render to wave file… for the selected tracks.
  • In the arranger, Tools ▸ Export all arranger tracks in its menu writes each track to its own file.

WAV files can carry more than audio. Arranger markers, Loop points, Note markers and Tempo write those into the file, for samplers that read them. Open the folder when done shows you the file afterwards.

Turn a pattern into an audio clip inside the project, to free up CPU or to edit it as audio. These are in the PATTERNS menu:

  • Render to audio clip renders the current pattern and adds it as a new audio clip in the instrument rack.
  • Render as audio clip… opens the export form first, for the folder, name and format.
  • Render and replace… does the same and also covers each of the pattern’s clips in the arranger with the new audio, muting the pattern clips.

Each one is a single undo step. To render part of a song, select it in the arranger and press Ctrl+Alt+C, Consolidate arranger selection.

FILE ▸ Export MIDI… (Shift+Ctrl+M) writes a MIDI file with one track per instrument, plus the tempo, time signatures and markers. With the toolbar’s switch on PAT you get the current pattern, and on SONG you get the song’s pattern clips. Muted notes are left out.

In the piano roll, Export as MIDI file… writes just that instrument’s notes in the pattern.

  • FILE ▸ Export zipped project… packs the project and its samples into one .zip, for sending to someone or keeping safe.
  • TOOLS ▸ Set up for MIDI export switches every instrument to Lemon MIDI Out. It asks first and is one undo step.
