Lemon MIDI Out

Lemon MIDI Out is an instrument that makes no sound. The notes you give it go out to a MIDI device, such as a hardware synth or a virtual instrument in another program. It’s part of Lemon Studio only: there’s no VST3 or CLAP version.

  1. Check that OPTIONS ▸ Enable MIDI output is ticked. Then open OPTIONS ▸ MIDI settings (F10). Each output device there has a port number. Note the number of the one you want to play.
  2. Choose ADD ▸ MIDI Out. A channel called MIDI Out is added and its window opens.
  3. Set Port to the device’s port number, and Channel to the MIDI channel the device listens on.
  4. Optionally set Patch (shown with its General MIDI name, such as “1 Acoustic Grand Piano”) and Bank to choose a sound on the device.
  5. Draw notes for the channel in the piano roll and press Space. The notes go to the device.
  • Channel is the MIDI channel, 1 to 16.
  • Port matches the port number of an output device in the MIDI settings.
  • Patch and the two Bank boxes are sent when playback starts, so the device switches to the sound you chose.
  • Send pan, volume and pitch sends the channel’s pan and volume, and resets the pitch bend, at the start of playback. Turn it off if the device should keep its own.

Change a value by dragging it up and down, or with the mouse wheel. The channel’s volume and pan knobs in the instrument rack are sent to the device.

TOOLS ▸ Set up for MIDI export turns every sampler and instrument channel in the project into a Lemon MIDI Out channel, so that each gets its own MIDI channel for a file. It asks first. The channels are numbered 1, 2, 3 and so on in rack order, on port 0, with their names, places and notes kept. It is one undo step, which brings back the instruments.

FILE ▸ Export MIDI… (Shift+Ctrl+M) writes the current pattern, or the song’s pattern clips, as a MIDI file, with a track for each channel. See exporting.

  • The knob pages and controllers of a MIDI Out channel, and Map note color to MIDI channel, don’t do anything yet. A project that has them keeps them.
  • Nothing is sent while you export audio.
